Your personality is doing real work in your business – whether you let it or not.
Send this to the friend who keeps trying to sound more “professional” so people will take her seriously.
You’re not going to be successful in spite of who you are.
You’re going to be successful because of who you are.
And I don’t mean that in a motivational-poster way.
I mean it very literally, very practically, very unsexy-for-the-internet.
Your personality is doing real work in your business – whether you let it or not.
That fun / quirky / weird / slightly nerdy / talks-with-her-hands / goes-on-side-tangents thing you keep editing out?
That’s memorability!!!
That’s what makes someone think, “Wait – her. I like how her brain works.”
And here’s the part I’ll say even if it ruffles feathers…
Trying to sound like “the industry” is how you become interchangeable.
I’ve watched incredibly smart women flatten themselves into professional fonts and colors and then wonder why:
– their content feels dead
– their audience won’t move
– their clients negotiate them like a commodity
Meanwhile the women who are quietly winning long-term are doing the opposite. They let their actual personality carry the message.
– they’re specific
– they’re opinionated
– they explain things in their way
– they don’t apologize for being interesting
– and they’re okay with not being for everyone
You are not unqualified because you’re fun.
You’re not less credible because you’re expressive.
You’re not “too much” because you have range.
You’re just not for people who want different.
So if you’ve been trying to sound more neutral, more polished, more LinkedIn-approved – try this instead:
Sound more like yourself.
Let your humor show up.
Let your nerdy explanations breathe.
Let your opinions have a spine.
Let your content feel like a human with a real brain wrote it.
(Which, conveniently, is how the right people find you.)
