For years we were all taught the same rule about Instagram growth: use the right hashtags so your content can be discovered.

But according to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, hashtags barely play a role in reach anymore.

That’s a pretty big shift.

The reason is AI.

Instagram’s algorithm is now analyzing what’s actually inside your content. It scans the words you say in your video, the text on screen, and the keywords in your caption to understand what your post is about. Then it decides who should see it.

In other words, Instagram no longer needs hashtags to figure out your topic. The platform can already tell if your content is about social media marketing, Instagram growth, content creation, or online business just by analyzing the content itself.

That’s why many creators are starting to use fewer hashtags, or even none at all.

If you still want to include them, a small number like three to five broad hashtags is more than enough while things continue to evolve.

The real focus now is clarity. Say the keywords in your video, write clear captions, and add relevant text on screen so the algorithm can understand your content and show it to the right audience.

Social media is changing quickly, and the biggest advantage right now is understanding how AI is reshaping discovery on platforms like Instagram.
