“Never hire your friends.”
One piece of advice you hear a lot in business is:
“Never work with your spouse.”
Or sometimes, “Never hire your friends.”
I've even said them in seasons where I was angry or jaded.
And I understand where that advice comes from. For some people, those dynamics really are complicated.
But Poul and I work together. We write books together. We build together. And honestly, some of my favorite memories in business come from building things alongside people I care deeply about.
There were years where our team felt a lot like doing life together.
Working hard on big goals.
Traveling together.
Celebrating wins.
Navigating the tough seasons.
Growing up in business side by side.
Some of those people started as friends.
Some became family-level friends along the way.
And when I look back over the years, a lot of the memories that make me smile the most came from those seasons.
So if you were part of those years with us, thank you. Truly. Those chapters meant a lot. ❤️
I think advice like “never work with your spouse” or “never hire friends” can be helpful for some people. But ultimately you have to decide what works for your life and your business.
For us, building things together has been one of the most meaningful parts of the journey.
The truth is, if I could, I would do it all over again the same way.
